That\u2019s kind of the magic sauce, though. Nobody knows what it\u2019s going to do, and I\u2019m just kind of experiencing it in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">In his entertaining new video series, made with production company Caviar, Cilli auditions AI actors using a variety of AI video software. The AI actors, it turns out, are uniformly bad at acting. They can\u2019t take direction; their emotions seem fake; they randomly face- and voice-swap with others in the scene. Sometimes new actors materialize out of nowhere. It\u2019s a mess.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">All this was evident from the first episode, posted Oct. 28, in which Cilli instructed a single AI actor to act angry, then excited and then try eating a cheeseburger. The weirdness that ensued included the gibberish and the gun.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div style=\"width: 0px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video playsinline data-keepplaying class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-29954-1\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/demo.techsystintel.com\/press_kitchen_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AuditioningAI.mp4?_=1\" \/><source type=\"\" src=\"\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/demo.techsystintel.com\/press_kitchen_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AuditioningAI.mp4\">https:\/\/demo.techsystintel.com\/press_kitchen_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/AuditioningAI.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">The series has quickly gained a fandom, no doubt in part because it allays fears\u2014at least for now\u2014that AI actors might soon replace humans. For Cilli, those fears were really the starting point of the project.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">\u201cThis summer, there was a lot of stuff in the news about the AI takeover, especially in commercials and Hollywood in general. I think we were all feeling pretty down about it,\u201d he said. \u201cMy wife encouraged me to just start playing with it. \u2018You\u2019ve got a funny brain, maybe you\u2019ll come up with something funny.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-chromatic=\"ignore\" data-testid=\"oembed-container\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">The Emmy Award winner created some short AI comedies, but while they turned out fairly well, they were time-consuming to make and not very fulfilling\u2014and didn\u2019t really find an audience. Cilli, who\u2019s done lots of commercial and improv acting himself and considers himself \u201can actor\u2019s director,\u201d then had the idea to interact with his characters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">This opened things up. In addition to the crazy things that transpire, it\u2019s Cilli\u2019s bemused reactions that give the clips their energy and humor<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/demo.techsystintel.com\/press_kitchen_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/44d8c018404c41f49c703bc2e46fa4b9.mov\">Directing AI Couple<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it would be an interesting way to show what AI can and can\u2019t do,\u201d Cilli said. \u201cI have an improv background. So I was like, I\u2019ll just improvise. I have no idea what they\u2019re going to do. The prompts are real. I\u2019ll just react to what\u2019s going on as if it\u2019s a real audition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the first video was quite broad\u2014asking the actor to try out different emotions\u2014the seven videos since then have been more specific, including the actors acting out commercial scripts. Arguably, they\u2019re even worse at this.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/demo.techsystintel.com\/press_kitchen_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Direct-AI-Actors.mov\">Direct AI Actors<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">There are lots of glaring technical errors in the videos. (\u201cPeople say it takes 200 takes to get the result you want,\u201d Cilli said.) But even when those errors are minimized, Cilli still feels the acting is incredibly wooden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">\u201cMaybe you can get to an acceptable performance, which in my opinion is still not as good as a human performance, just because they\u2019re not drawing from anything,\u201d he said. \u201cI think it was in the third video where I\u2019m like, \u2018OK, yeah, you guys did everything I said, but it still sucks.\u2019 Even if it looks good and they don\u2019t switch faces\u2014or whatever crazy stuff happens\u2014I\u2019m still not impressed with the actual performance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">In Cilli\u2019s most recent video, released Thursday, he auditions\u00a0<a title=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/tilly-norwood-creator-eline-van-der-velden-ai-actress-1236574125\/\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/tilly-norwood-creator-eline-van-der-velden-ai-actress-1236574125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tilly Norwood<\/a>\u00a0from AI talent studio Xicoia, who\u2019s become famous this fall as the first truly well-known AI actress. (So far, she\u2019s appeared mostly in short comedy sketches and mock movie trailers.) She\u2019s also, it probably goes without saying, pretty wretched at acting.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/demo.techsystintel.com\/press_kitchen_dev\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Direct-AI-Family-1.mov\">Direct AI Family<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">Reaction to Norwood has been almost universally negative across the industry\u2014perhaps not surprisingly, as she\u2019s a threat to human actors\u2019 livelihoods. On the flip side, Cilli has been getting a lot of love and praise for his videos, which put characters like Norwood in their place\u2014in a lighthearted way. This has made the project a joy to create, said Cilli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph u-text-lg\">\u201cWhat\u2019s been incredibly heartwarming is so many people have said, \u2018This is really making me happy,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s cheered up a lot of people. I feel like my purpose in life is to make people happy and spread joy. I love that people can look at it and laugh. We\u2019ve got to laugh along the way. We have to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cilli said he plans to continue the project indefinitely.
