Venice premiere “The Room Next Door” is Almod\u00f3var’s first English-language feature, but he already directed Swinton in the Jean Cocteau-inspired short “The Human Voice.”<\/h1>\n

Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u00a0can now count Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore among his new cinematic muses.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning Spanish director\u2019s first English-language feature, \u201cThe Room Next Door,\u201d was confirmed Tuesday morning as expected to premiere at the\u00a02024 Venice Film Festival in competition. Timed to artistic director Alberto Barbera\u2019s lineup announcement, the festival has also released a first-look image of the\u00a0film, which you can see above.<\/p>\n

Almod\u00f3var has made two short films in English: the Jean Cocteau-inspired breakup tone poem \u201cThe Human Voice,\u201d which premiered at\u00a0Venice\u00a0in 2020, and gay Western \u201cStrange Way of Life,\u201d starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, which played Cannes 2023. That was all in service of preparing to make his first movie entirely in English, \u201cThe Room Next Door,\u201d led by \u201cThe Human Voice\u201d star Tilda Swinton as a war correspondent named Martha. Her friend, an author named Ingrid (Julianne Moore), brings various buried resentments to a head in Madrid. The rest of the cast includes John Turturro, Alessandro Nivola, and Juan Diego Botto, among others.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the official synopsis: \u201c\u2018The Room Next Door\u2019 follows the story of a very imperfect mother and a spiteful daughter separated by a serious misunderstanding. Between them, another woman, Ingrid (Julianne Moore), the mother\u2019s friend, is the keeper of their pain and bitterness. Martha, the mother (played by Tilda Swinton), is a war reporter and Ingrid an autofictional novelist. The film addresses the endless cruelty of war, the very different ways in which the two female authors approach and write about reality, death, friendship, and sexual pleasure as the best allies in the fight against horror. And it also evokes the sweet awakening with the chirping of birds, in a house built in the middle of a nature reserve in New England, where the two friends live in an extreme and strangely sweet situation.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sony Pictures Classics, as the distributor does for nearly all Almod\u00f3var\u2019s movies nowadays, will release \u201cThe Room Next Door\u201d in the fall in North America. \u201cThe Room Next Door\u201d is produced by El Deseo, the company Pedro shares with his brother and longtime collaborator, Agust\u00edn.<\/p>\n

Sony Classics previously released\u00a0Pedro Almod\u00f3var\u2018s 2019 feature, \u201cPain and Glory,\u201d to a Best Actor Oscar nomination for Antonio Banderas and a Best International Feature nomination representing Spain. Almod\u00f3var\u2019s 2021 Venice opener \u201cParallel Mothers\u201d earned Pen\u00e9lope Cruz a Best Actress nomination. Based on the official synopsis, \u201cThe Room Next Door\u201d extends Almod\u00f3var\u2019s late-career interest in examining his own country\u2019s politics, as \u201cParallel Mothers\u201d used melodrama to consider the Spanish Civil War under Francisco Franco\u2019s dictatorial regime.<\/p>\n

Washington Square Films<\/a> is the U.S. production company for the film, which also shot in New York City. Executive producers from Washington Square are Joshua Blum and Han West.<\/p>\n

Almod\u00f3var had planned to make \u201cA Manual for Cleaning Women,\u201d an adaptation of Lucia Berlin\u2019s short stories and starring Cate Blanchett, his first English feature\u00a0before moving on<\/a>\u00a0to \u201cThe Room Next Door.\u201d The latter film shot in Madrid, on location, earlier this year. Venice\u2019s Alberto Barbera touted the director during the festival press conference July 23 for rushing the edit to get the film into the competition.<\/p>\n

Swinton\u00a0previously told IndieWire<\/a>\u00a0a bit about \u201cThe Room Next Door\u201d: \u201cIt\u2019s a beautiful thing, and I can\u2019t say that much more about it, but I can tell you it\u2019s a\u00a0real<\/em>\u00a0Almod\u00f3var film. What I can tell you is that it\u2019s about mature friendship in a way.\u201d Swinton also said it\u2019s a \u201cnatural successor\u201d to \u201cPain and Glory,\u201d semi-autobiographical for Almod\u00f3var in its reflections on a fictional filmmaker\u2019s life and work.<\/p>\n

Alongside Almod\u00f3var\u2019s \u201cThe Room Next Door,\u201d world premieres making their way to Venice include Luca Guadagnino\u2019s \u201cQueer,\u201d Pablo Larra\u00edn\u2019s \u201cMaria,\u201d and\u00a0Brady Corbet\u2019s \u201cThe Brutalist.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n
