The ads provoked Philadelphians by suggesting the traditional Philly cheesesteak is subpar compared with Zaxby\u2019s version, which is made with fried chicken.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-3\">\u201cJust like the Philly you know and love, but good,\u201d read one of the billboards. \u201cFinally, the Philly done right. Just 169 miles away,\u201d said another\u2014a reference to a Zaxby\u2019s in Virginia that\u2019s the closest to Philadelphia among the Georgia-based chain\u2019s 900-plus locations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item--paragraph--type--photographs field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--photographs paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"article-images-wrapper \">\n<div><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_660\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_1.jpg 1x\" type=\"image\/jpeg\" media=\"all and (min-width: 1024px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_765\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_1.jpg 1x\" type=\"image\/jpeg\" media=\"all and (min-width: 768px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_340\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_1.jpg 1x\" type=\"image\/jpeg\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_660\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-4\">The billboards were just the beginning. To antagonize Philly further, the chain is now unveiling a TV spot starring Dolph Lundgren, the Swedish actor who played Ivan Drago\u2014the ultimate villain to Philadelphia\u2019s Rocky Balboa\u2014in \u201cRocky IV.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-5\">The 30-second spot shows Lundgren getting heckled as he walks the city\u2019s streets, talking up the new sandwich, before raising his arms triumphantly on the famous \u201cRocky Steps\u201d leading up to the Philadelphia Museum of Art.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_660\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_2.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"inline-ad-para paragraph-newsletter-11\">Avinash Baliga, who\u00a0<a class=\"omnitrack inline-paragraph-link\" href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/agency-news\/tombras-hires-maximum-efforts-avinash-baliga-first-executive-creative-director\/2497061\" data-omnilocation=\"articlebody\" data-omnilink=\"editorial-link\">recently joined Tombras as executive creative director<\/a>\u00a0and who led the campaign creatively, told Ad Age that all good advertising today has to get a reaction\u2014and this out-of-market trolling certainly fit the bill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-12\">\u201cThere are certain foods that cities are very passionate about\u2014the New York pizza, the Chicago hot dog. And the Philly cheesesteak is right up there,\u201d he said. \u201cWe knew this sandwich would get a strong reaction. So we were like, how do we get even stronger reactions?\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"item--paragraph--type--body field__item\">\n<div class=\"block block-\">\n<div class=\"field--name-field-paragraph-body \">\n<p class=\"inline-ad-para paragraph-newsletter-13\">The billboards reportedly did just that. Dooley Tombras, the agency\u2019s president, said one popular Philly podcast picked up the story and complained that these were the most disrespectful billboards in town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-14\">\u201cThen, in the comments of the podcast, somebody was like, \u2018Let\u2019s call all the graffiti artists\u2014we need to deface these billboards,\u2019\u201d Tombras added. \u201cWe were like, \u2018Oh man, we should have put them lower down [on the street]\u2019 because that\u2019s kind of the reaction you want.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"item--paragraph--type--photographs field__item\">\n<div class=\"paragraph paragraph--type--photographs paragraph--view-mode--default\">\n<div class=\"article-images-wrapper \">\n<div><picture><source srcset=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_660\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_4.jpg 1x\" type=\"image\/jpeg\" media=\"all and (min-width: 1024px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_765\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_4.jpg 1x\" type=\"image\/jpeg\" media=\"all and (min-width: 768px)\" \/><source srcset=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_340\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_4.jpg 1x\" type=\"image\/jpeg\" \/><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/s3-prod.adage.com\/s3fs-public\/styles\/width_660\/public\/20231011_Zaxbys_billboard_4.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/picture><\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-15\">Baliga said Lundgren was a joy to work with.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-16\">\u201cHe really got into it,\u201d he said. \u201cHe\u2019s obviously not done too much advertising, but it was fun because we had to write it in his voice and it was very collaborative. We went through a couple rounds kind of writing it with him. And he comes from a school of acting where he really got into the role. We\u2019d read out the script and he\u2019d\u00a0slip into character and read it back to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-17\">\u201cPhiladelphia and I have a decades-long history,\u201d Lundgren said in a statement. \u201cSo when Zaxby\u2019s came to me ready to take on the city\u2019s iconic sandwich with a Philly of their own, I knew I had to be part of this campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-18\">Tombras has been doing offbeat work for Zaxby\u2019s for years\u2014from 2019\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"omnitrack inline-paragraph-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ispot.tv\/ad\/oRIZ\/zaxbys-zensation-denim-on-denim\" data-omnilocation=\"articlebody\" data-omnilink=\"editorial-link\">nostalgia-fueled comic spots<\/a>\u00a0for the Zensation salad to last year\u2019s\u00a0<a class=\"omnitrack inline-paragraph-link\" href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/article\/agency-news\/zaxbys-reimagines-guy-buffalo-video-and-brands-unite-help-colorado-wildfire-victims\/2393146\" data-omnilocation=\"articlebody\" data-omnilink=\"editorial-link\">\u201cGuy on a Buffalo Wing\u201d spoof.<\/a>\u00a0Patrick Schwing, chief marketing and strategy officer of Zaxby\u2019s (and former CMO at Arby\u2019s), said the new campaign reflects that same spirit\u2014after what was a painstaking product development process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-19\">\u201cThis sandwich and campaign pose a provocative question: Could we as Zaxby\u2019s take an iconic sandwich and make it better?\u201d he said. \u201cAfter a year of development and testing, we knew we had a sandwich worthy of the name \u2018Philly.\u2019 And what better place to debut this sandwich than Philadelphia? For those who don\u2019t believe, we invite you to come to your closest Zaxby\u2019s and\u00a0try it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-20\">Along with the OOH and TV work, Tombras also recorded man-on-the-street videos for TikTok, which really capture Philadelphians\u2019 confusion and animosity toward the idea of a Fried Chicken Philly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-21\">Targeting consumers in a market where you don\u2019t have any locations is an unusual strategy. But the ensuing PR has been reaching Zaxby\u2019s markets, and the Fried Chicken Philly has exceeded expectations, selling at almost three times the forecasted rate, the company said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-newsletter-22\">The Philly campaign continues this week, as Zaxby\u2019s is planning to set up food trucks for one more chance at ticking off the locals.<\/p>\n<p
