Andr\u00e9 Holland (Passing), Kate Mara (Black Mirror), Zazie Beetz (The Harder They Fall) and Stephen McKinley Henderson (Beau Is Afraid) are set to star in The Dutchman, a psychological thriller based on the Obie Award-winning play by Amiri Baraka that has landed a SAG-AFTRA Interim Agreement.<\/h2>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Directing from his script written with filmmaker Qasim Basir is\u00a0Andre Gaines, the Emmy-nominated multi-hyphenate behind Showtime\u2019s 2021 documentary\u00a0The One and Only Dick Gregory<\/em>. Production kicks off in New York City September 25th, putting a group of 150 or so back to work.<\/p>\n

\n

Set on a New York subway,\u00a0The Dutchman<\/em>\u00a0centers on an encounter between a well-to-do Black man and an enchanting white woman who match wits in a sexualized game of cat and mouse that leads to a violent conclusion. The searing confrontation amplifies the dimensions of racial conflict in America in this adaptation of the stage show first presented at the Cherry Lane Theatre in Greenwich Village, New York City, in March 1964, which was later adapted into a critically acclaimed 1966 film starring Shirley Knight and Al Freeman Jr.<\/p>\n

Gaines noted during a recent conversation with Deadline that when this \u201chistoric play\u201d taking place at the height of the civil rights movement came about, the famed playwright Baraka went by the name of LeRoi Jones. He took on a new name \u201cafter having been inspired by that movement, and launched the Black arts movement that happened up in Harlem, and has been a prolific playwright ever since.\u201d Baraka passed away in 2014.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a story that was near and dear to me, as I like to tell stories about historic times, places, people,\u201d said Gaines, who will shoot his new project on a live MTA train in New York. \u201cI did that with my film\u00a0The One and Only Dick Gregory<\/em>; I also did that with a film called\u00a0After Jackie<\/em>\u00a0and really wanted to elevate this story to bring it to new audiences and broaden its scope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gaines came to set Holland as his lead after attending NYU alongside him years back, having locked his IA about a month ago, and will produce\u00a0The Dutchman<\/em>\u00a0through his multi-platform media company, Cinemation Studios. Producing alongside him is Jonathan T. Baker, the Emmy nominee known for\u00a0Sylvie\u2019s Love<\/em>,\u00a0The Banker<\/em>, and\u00a0Crown Heights<\/em>. Joshua Blum and Han West are exec producing for Washington Square Films<\/a>, with UTA Independent Film Group repping sales.<\/p>\n

Most recently working with filmmakers including Luca Guadagnino (Bones and All<\/em>), Rebecca Hall (Passing<\/em>), Jack Thorne &\u00a0Damien Chazelle\u00a0(The Eddy<\/em>) and\u00a0Steven Soderbergh\u00a0(High Flying Bird<\/em>), the in-demand SAG Award nom Holland will soon be seen playing Huey P. Newton in Apple\u2019s miniseries\u00a0The Big Cigar<\/em>. Other upcoming projects include John Ridley\u2019s\u00a0Shirley<\/em>, Duke Johnson\u2019s Neon pic\u00a0The Actor<\/em>\u00a0and Titus Kaphar\u2019s\u00a0Exhibiting Forgiveness<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Mara was most recently seen starring on FX\u2019s\u00a0Class of \u201909<\/em>\u00a0and in a memorable episode of\u00a0Black Mirror\u00a0<\/em>opposite Aaron Paul and Josh Hartnett. The Emmy nom will soon be seen opposite Morgan Freeman and Laurence Fishburne in the drama\u00a0The Little Bedroom<\/em>, an adaptation of the 2010 Swiss pic\u00a0La Petite Chambre<\/em>, and recently signed on to rejoin Fishburne in the sci-fi thriller\u00a0The Astronaut<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Best known for roles in\u00a0Atlanta<\/em>,\u00a0Joker<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0Deadpool 2<\/em>, the Emmy-nominated Beetz has also recently been seen on\u00a0Black Mirror<\/em>, as well as films like the Brad Pitt-led\u00a0Bullet Train<\/em>, Netflix Western\u00a0The Harder They Fall<\/em>\u00a0and the fantastical Edson Oda drama\u00a0Nine Days<\/em>. She\u2019s next set to rejoin Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Phillips\u2019\u00a0Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux<\/em>, a sequel to the aforementioned dark take on the DC mythology of the Joker, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide.<\/p>\n

A Tony Award nominee, Henderson\u2019s recent credits on the film side include Ari Aster\u2019s\u00a0Beau Is Afraid<\/em>,\u00a0Causeway<\/em>\u00a0opposite Brian Tyree Henry and Jennifer Lawrence and Denis Villeneuve\u2019s\u00a0Dune<\/em>. In addition to\u00a0Dune: Part Two<\/em>, which has\u00a0pushed back its release\u00a0from November to March 15, 2024 due to the strikes, the veteran character actor will next be seen starring opposite Cailee Spaeny, Kirsten Dunst and Wagner Moura in Alex Garland\u2019s action drama\u00a0Civil War<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Gaines is a writer, director and producer best known for his work on\u00a0The One and Only Dick Gregory<\/em>, the Showtime doc spotlighting the remarkable life and career of comedian and activist Dick Gregory, and History Channel\u2019s\u00a0After Jackie<\/em>, examining the fight for equality of the second wave of Black MLB players. Through Cinemation, he\u2019s also produced and financed the buzzy HBO docuseries\u00a0The Lady and the Dale<\/em>, the remake of Stephen King\u2019s\u00a0Children of the Corn<\/em>, Spike Lee\u2019s\u00a0Da Sweet Blood of Jesus<\/em>, and the SXSW-winning film\u00a0Bill Nye: Science Guy<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Other recent projects include the HBO series\u00a0The Anarchists<\/em>, the Paramount+ film\u00a0Angola Do You Hear Us? Voices from a Plantation Prison<\/em>, and the animated feature\u00a0The Immortal Warrior<\/em>\u00a0starring Rodrigo Santoro for Amazon.<\/p>\n
