If like me you\u2019ve listened to a lot of reggae throughout your life, you\u2019ve probably already heard a lot about the supposed benefits of marijuana, but despite the claims of artists like Peter Tosh (who recommends it\u00a0as\u00a0a remedy\u00a0for \u201cthe flu\u201d, \u201casthma\u201d and \u201ctuberculosis\u201d) or Sizzla (who states\u00a0it\u2019s good for \u201cthe children\u201d and \u201ccataract\u201d), research is ongoing into the advantages of\u00a0Cannabis. Yet with a reported\u00a0200+million users\u00a0worldwide, not everyone who partakes in a little weed is doing so for medicinal aid\u00a0or for the purposes of zoning out, there are just as many who feel the \u201cclarity\u201d offered by the drug can help shift your perspective and improve your life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In\u00a0Mohammad Gorjestani\u2019s intoxicating 24-minute documentary\u00a0Somewhere Higher, we\u2019re introduced a number of individuals \u2013 from bodybuilders to\u00a0mothers \u2013 with exactly this outlook, as they \u201csmoke a bowl\u201d and share their love of marijuana. Described as a \u201cvisual mix tape anthology\u201d by its creators, the short playfully skips from interviewee to interviewee, passing on insight and good vibes and even finding time to throw in the odd \u2018smoke break\u2019 for\u00a0its audience.<\/p>\n

One of the excellent, innovative \u2018smoke breaks\u2019 that intersperse the interviews in\u00a0Somewhere Higher<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Speaking to\u00a0Gorjestani about the inspiration behind\u00a0Somewhere Higher<\/em>, the filmmaker revealed that growing up \u201cpretty much every single person I knew\u201d smoked weed and he felt compelled to create a film that represents a cannabis culture more realistic than those often presented in the media. \u201cIt was always weird to me that in this country alcohol was legal and weed wasn\u2019t\u201d,\u00a0Gorjestani explains. \u201cFor it to be legalized and growingly decriminalized for the sake of capitalism means the system and people who made our lives difficult for smoking weed \u2013 the ones who demoted us, judged us, etc \u2013 are the ones profiting off it\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Labelling his short as a \u201cpost-modern take\u201d on the representation of marijuana use in popular culture, the director wanted to create an alternative to \u201cthe existing aesthetic and storytelling around cannabis which, to me, has either been in journalistic documentary or big consumer marketing\u201d.\u00a0Believing that these two approaches to covering the conversation around the topic left a huge hole between their contrasting\u00a0methods,\u00a0Gorjestani spotted an opportunity to actually present a narrative from within the community, from the people who know the real story.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

From here, the director started to build a concept with \u201ca bit of a tv channel vibe\u201d where he aimed to reject conformity and present an eclectic mix of visual styles, alongside the diverse selection of perspectives his interviewees offered. By focusing on the \u201cfolks who make Michigan and Detroit what it is creatively\u201d and \u201cwho also happen to use cannabis as a lubricant to their brilliance\u201d,\u00a0Gorjestani really had to ensure\u00a0he brought his A-game to the aesthetic of\u00a0Somewhere Higher\u00a0to truly pay homage to those he includes in his film.<\/p>\n

\"Somewhere<\/p>\n

Michael \u201cCambio\u201d Fernandez\u2019s 35mm photography is one of the standout aspects of the excellent production on show in\u00a0Something Higher<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As is always the case with\u00a0Gorjestani, he certainly doesn\u2019t disappoint in that department and alongside being a heady think piece,\u00a0Somewhere Higher\u00a0is also a slick piece of filmmaking with so much to praise in its production, it\u2019s hard to credit it all here. The soundtrack is vital in driving the film forward and\u00a0Ashley Rodholm\u2019s\u00a0edit ensures the film never loses\u00a0its momentum throughout what could be seen as a lengthy run-time, in the world of short films. However, it\u2019s\u00a0Michael \u201cCambio\u201d Fernandez\u2019s\u00a035mm cinematography that feels like the real standout here. With so many different people and locations to shoot, he ensures the visuals manage to feel both fresh and yet connected for each section. \u201cI wanted the film to have elevated visuals, to place a premium on subject matter that has been weighed down\u201d, the director explains, before adding that \u201cI wanted the images to exist timelessly and I think the film was able to deliver on that\u201d.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Although I don\u2019t smoke weed myself anymore,\u00a0Somewhere Higher\u00a0reminds me a lot of what it was that I enjoyed about\u00a0marijuana for many years\u00a0\u2013 that sense of community, that sense of freedom, that alternative state of\u00a0consciousness. I\u2019m sure\u00a0Gorjestani had a lot more in mind than just promoting cannabis use in his short, but he presents a glowing case for the benefits of the much-maligned herb and adds a fresh new perspective to the conversations around it. On top of that,\u00a0Somewhere Higher\u00a0is just an outstanding short film, consistently inventive throughout, the talented filmmaker and his equally skilled crew ensure they keep the engagement levels at a peak for the complete duration of the piece and that is no easy task.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Produced by\u00a0Even\/Odd\u00a0in association with Higher Power and funded by\u00a0Common Citizen,\u00a0Somewhere Higher\u00a0is\u00a0Gorjestani\u2019s third title to feature on Short of the Week, after\u00a0Refuge\u00a0and\u00a0Exit 12\u00a0and in my opinion, it\u2019s his best work yet.<\/p>\n
