Writer-director Dash Shaw\u2019s\u00a0Cryptozoo<\/em><\/a>\u2014featuring animation direction by Jane Samborski\u2014explores the limits of\u00a0personal responsibility<\/a>\u00a0and the importance of stepping back to consider the big picture from time to time, especially one\u2019s own ever-shifting place within it. io9 got to view the film early at\u00a0Sundance<\/a>, but now you can get a peek at what it\u2019s all about from its first trailer.<\/p>\n

Cryptozoo<\/em>\u00a0gives us complex characters who evolve as they confront those themes. And it wraps its fanciful story in brilliant animation that basically defines \u201ceye candy\u201d while imagining a world where\u00a0cryptids<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0mythical beasts<\/a>\u00a0long for the freedom to just be their own strange, sometimes scary selves. After winning the Innovator Award in the (virtual) 2021 Sundance Film Festival\u2019s\u00a0NEXT category<\/a>, which spotlights films that \u201cunite digital technology with the art of movie-making,\u201d\u00a0Cryptozoo<\/em>\u00a0was picked up for distribution by Magnolia Pictures, which means its truly unique story and visuals will finally reach their full glory on the big screen. Lake Bell<\/a>\u00a0stars as Lauren, a cryptozookeeper who travels around rescuing persecuted cryptids and bringing them to the sanctuary she\u2019s devoted her life to serving. But she begins to question her crusade\u2014and the Cryptozoo itself\u2014after she meets Phoebe (Angeliki Papoulia), a\u00a0Gorgon<\/a>\u00a0who\u2019s been able to live among humans with the help of special contact lenses and snake tranquilizers (for her hair). Meanwhile, the U.S. military lurks on the fringes, hoping to find a way to weaponize some of the exhibits that are kept under Lauren\u2019s watchful eye.<\/p>\n
